Madison has charmed many people at first sight. While visiting the Brooklyn art museum, a painting of a view from Lake Mendota appeared on a gallery wall. In 1999, Historic Madison purchased three collections of negatives from retired photographers. Angus McVicar, George Stein, and William Wollin's collections were all purchased by one individual in the 1980s. These collections are currently being indexed at the Wisconsin Historical Society Visual Archives, their new home. For the State Sesquicentennial celebrations in 1998, we purchased the rights to many images in the Wisconsin Historical Society's collection. We cannot give permission for you to use these images.
Historic Madison has no permanent collection space, so it has not had the
opportunity to collect and possess photographs. An excellent source of
photographs is the
Visual Archives division
of the WI Historical Society.
