David Mollenhoff wrote a definitive history of Madison from its beginnings through 1920. For it and other history books on various aspects on Madison's history, see our page on others' work. Madison's Parks Department was originally the work of private individuals who wanted green space to enjoy on the weekends. These men formed the Madison Park and Pleasure Drive Association.
