Cemetery

This committee includes members of the organization, not just board members. Members plan and conduct tours of Forest Hill and Resurrection Cemeteries annually or upon request. They also provide readings at book stores or for civic groups of the city.

Development: board

This committee serves a strategic planning function. The president will guide the discussion with topics throughout the year.

Financial Audit

This committee works primarily in January and February to assure the organization's books are in good order. An audit packet is available for those participating and takes about 3 hours. Review any grant applications for the organization and requests of proposal funding from groups, individuals and make recommendations to the board; these may happen throughout the year. Members could also assist in preparing billings to local stores for their publication orders.

Membership Marketing

This committee writes the annual renewal letters and maintains a database. This work is usually limited to October through March. Throughout the remainder of the year, members develop strategies for attracting new members, including the use of advertising. Members assist the Programs committee by publicizing programs through press releases, letters to neighborhood associations, and other means.

Publication Distribution

Members continue relationships with the many bookstores and gift shops around the city to keep them stocked in all HMI publications; members are responsible for a store and take orders, deliver orders, handle the billing and keep the treasurer informed of bills going out and paid. Members could also help with the bulk mailing of the Journal.

Publication Planning

Members review drafts of new publications and the annual Journal before printing. It might also help solicit articles/authors and assist in locating illustrations for articles. Analyze the current oral history audio tapes and determine if additional print uses should be made of them. As funds allow, convert all audio masters to compact disks and identify additional people to interview, train interviewers, and conduct interviews.

Programs/Education

This committee plans approximately four membership programs each year, including the Annual Meeting. The board has an interest in pursuing at least one elementary school outreach activity.
