The Capitol Park was another favorite haunt and almost daily during the summer months we went to the north part of the park where stood two large elms. Every time I pass them now 40 years later I am reminded of those happy boyhood days. There it was I learned to play mumblety-peg until I was as good at it as any boy in the gang, frequently going through the entire list of fingers, toes, eyes, ears, nose, chin, head and all the others, without a miss. Col. Joseph W. Jackson, ca. 1925

The Capital Park, about 1898, showing the Centennial Fountain erected in 1876. The Park Hotel and First Baptist Church can be seen in the background on Carroll Street. Until the turn of the century Madison had no true parks, and the fourteen acres surrounding the Capitol were extensively used by city residents for park purposes. SHSW WHi(X3)23286
