VJ Day celebrants on Mifflin Street and Madisons biggest traffic jam, as photographed by Arthur Vinje. SHSW Whi(V51) 1
My friend Elsa Splett and I were seeing a movie on the Square when news of V-J Day came over the screen. All the people left the theater yelling and crying, going into the streets around the Square. So many people gathered there that the buses were unable to run. We had to walk the four miles home. We were both thirteen years old. Millie Jenkins Brunner, 1996
