Robert M. La Follette, Sr. campaigning for the Presidency on the steps of the Wisconsin Capitol, November 2, 1924. Unquestionably Madison's most famous favorite son, La Follette served as governor and U.S. Senator. The Progressive reform ideas he espoused in the national political arena bear a definite Madison stamp. SHSW WHi(X3)18453

Living in the shadow of the Capitol dome, the people here are in immediate contact with the forces that control state government. Madison and Dane County, therefore, have had greater opportunities to watch the struggle at close range than have other communities in the state. Capital Times, 1921
