An engraving from the 1877 Wisconsin Blue Book by Milwaukee Lithograph and Engraving Company. This Capitol (Madison’s second) was begun in 1857 and completed in 1869, with two wings added in 1884. The stone and iron fence in the foreground was constructed in 1872. Placement of the fence, which affected the sidewalks and the availability of space for horse hitching, was an early issue that upset Madisonians. The fence was removed in 1899, although portions still grace the current Executive Residence.
